Five miniatures/ndcirclingandcirclina
2015
8’30’’
for alto flute, clarinet, violin, and cello
commissioned by Psappha
Five miniatures/ndcirclingandcirclinga was written as a response to Psappha’s call for scores focusing on the idea of rebuilding a broken instrument. Throughout the piece, the ensemble is treated as one instrument which is gradually constructed, slowly transforming over the five short movements from each player acting totally independent of one another to them finally coming together to orchestrate one musical idea.
The piece also continues my exploration of music built around notions of repetition and recycling material, creating works which I see more as a static structures to be observed from various angles and decoded, rather than followed through a clear, linearly driven narrative.
