featuring Eve Stainton
Operating on the blurred lines between long-form music and sculptural installation, Each one cancels the last (Hector) sees performers dispersed throughout Blackheath Halls, with visitors free to move throughout and settle within the piece as it unfolds.
Fragile, hyperactive, yet somewhat static, the piece shimmers around isolated strophes of kinetic, hollowed out sound spaced across the hall, supported by an onstage chorus of strings mumbling misremembered Berlioz.
The delicacy of the music displaced across such a cavernous space removes any single perspective and eludes clear linear narrative, instead creating a temperamental ecosystem in which listeners can carve their own routes and vistas.
Within this ritualistic activity, Stainton will follow a spacious but formal score, similar to the musicians’ tone and pace. Evading traditional notions of foreground and accompaniment, materials, posture and loose movement cycles will lend to the sound and liveness in the room, with a texture of contribution rather than disruption, which in itself is potentially impossible.
Premiered by Octandre Ensemble and students from Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music &
Dance.
